Earth is gone and humankind is scattered across the stars scratching to survive. On a small planet of wonder in the middle of the unknown, one man lives in blissful hermitage in a Valley of staggering beauty. Long having despaired of humanity, he lives and works alone with a super high-tech array of circuitry implanted in his brain that records everything he thinks, feels and experiences. But something is very, very wrong... He is falling apart. But why? What is the cause? Is it something outside of him or within? His only chance to answer these questions and to find a cure is to leave the comfort of his adopted home Valley and take the long arduous journey through a beautiful but terrifying terrain to the equally great horror of Town. It is there that one small group of humanity resides. It is there that he will find hope of help within the hell of other people. But to reach Town he must first pass numerous unusual but majestic waterfalls up to and under a weird mountain. First he must cross a treacherous expanse of grassland, tundra and desert where the normal rules of time and space can have little meaning. First he must pass other ineffable mysteries and travel through a deep, dark otherworld forest where peril hides behind every tree. It is a journey across a world where everything is against him: the seasons are against him, the land is against him, Nature is against him. It often seems that even his own self is against him. And to top it all off, there is something out there. It's a race against time, and in so many senses... Both allegory and literal sci fi, this gripping armchair ride is a dark psychological and philosophical tale. Packed with wonder and terror, the story takes the reader on a journey of extraterrestrial and existential survival in a mad land. Full of determination and tension, it depicts a combat of sheer endurance in the face of the bizarre and unbelievable. Brimming with hope and hardship, it shows the power of the will when confronted by insane changes to the self. "Strange alien spider octopuses, brain implants, wormholes ...what's there not to like...(?)" - reader comment. “...intimate, tense sci fi that somehow conveys universal themes of identity and uncertainty...” – reviewer comment. "...startlingly original debut novel creating its own Psycho-Enviro-Sci-Fi-Existential-Horror genre." – reviewer comment. "...an epic journey/quest across a fantastical, nightmarish land, with the constant undercurrent of philosophical enquiry into Being and Time and the nature of self. It's a dark Wizard Of Oz penned by Martin Heidegger and reimagined by Philip K Dick." - reviewer comment

About the Author:

Soren T. Murdock has been writing ever since he could in one form or another. Practically born scribbling in his notebook, he is hardly ever been seen without it. His earliest writings involved childhood superhero comics, teenage songs/poems and short stories. Other work in adulthood has been independent movie scripts, sardonic & humorous parody readers’ letters to Japanese newspapers, and fictional comedy/surreal biographies – still a separate writing project. With a BA in Philosophy, an MA in ELT and teaching English for Academic Purposes for a living at university level, Soren has an obvious interest in philosophy and language. This of course shows in his writing. His basic principle is that literature should be about the human condition and that science fiction can push this and work within the theatre of extremes. He believes that as well as everyday experience and imagination, philosophy itself can provide great fuel for ideas and stories. Murdock has a lot cooking in his speculative fiction pots within an overall project entitled 'Tales of the Fall and Fleeing Saga". Set in a post-apocalyptic milieu, the series will explore the future with each book depicting the survival of humankind as they scatter themselves across the Omniverse adapting, evolving and devolving as they go. 'Fragments: A world falls apart...' is the first in the series to be produced with three more books 'Metempsychosis', 'Artefact' and 'The Lost and Left Behind' currently in development. "People always said I was from another planet, so it's time to write about it!" - Soren T. Murdock Soren T. Murdock can be found on: Goodreads: please follow and leave reviews - preferably good!
