***Never Say Never Excerpt***"It isn't like the Wheel of Fortune. I do more than point and smile. Weather requires thinking on my feet. Even though we use computers and Doppler radar for forecasts, a big part of the job is to explain real time weather. It takes creativity to get people to understand. I take pride in my work. A lot happens behind the scenes." "Tell me about it." Her eyes locked with mine. "What do you do?" "I ended up in the Marines," I answered--wondering why I relayed that. "Really, so what are you?" she asked. We stood outside the airport lounge. It was busy with people coming and going, and I stared down into her face. Being a sniper, the military training I'd received--endured and survived--defined a part of me in deadhead bureaucratic terms. Kill shots: useful only in military statistics about cost analysis and precision. Not something I discussed."For starters, I'm not a what.""Funny." Her lips curved into the sort of smile I'd like to sample. More when she laughed swerving my way and said, "You know what I mean. What's your bio? Where are you stationed?" Scratching my fingers along my jaw, I didn't correct her about my Marine status or toss out what I normally said to women I met on the fly. In place of answering her, I jutted my chin. "How about a table?" She scanned the inside. "There's one in the back. I'll grab the table and you can order the drinks." For a one-time hookup, she had me interested in her story. That was a game I normally never played. Canting toward her, I wondered why of all the people I'd met, she pricked my curiosity. I watched her, trying to get a read on where she was coming from. "Are you in a hurry?" "Umm, let's see. We're at the airport and not here to hang out in the terminal tavern. Don't you have somewhere to go?" Christ on a biscuit. Even dressed like a Bible slapping Baptist, this little meteorologist lit my fuse all the way. "Girl, I can think of a few places I'd like to go. With you." She held my gaze and smiled. "Soldier, I bet you do." Her mouth was my downfall.Every cell in my body shouted: GAME ON. She got to me, unlocking a side of me that wanted to spend the night, hell the next week, teaching her a thing or two about how to rein in her smart talk and use her mouth for other things.
