The idea of a tie-in novel by a celebrity author is enough to make readers and reviewers alike cringe. The reality, however, is much more agreeable. The author played Angelique in the cult 1970s vampire TV show Dark Shadows and has subsequently acquired a very fair hand with characterization, pacing, and setting. Barnabas Collins himself has long returned to his coffin, and the Collins Parker’s David has fallen in love with is Jacqueline, a reincarnation of Angelique. The young couple is snatched up in a time warp that takes them back to Prohibition years, where they have to battle gangsters to hide Collins family secrets. Meanwhile, contemporary Collinwood has to fight the same battle against a snoopy and ruthless paranormal investigator. This probably will go over better with hardcore Dark Shadows fans, but there are a lot of them out there. --Roland Green
