9781522974079: Ghanarama: Stories from Two Years in Ghana

With a naive sense of adventure and idealism, Anthony and his wife Laura, a teacher and a vet from Croydon, South London, volunteered with Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) in northern Ghana for two years – a country they knew virtually nothing about beforehand. Their experiences were sometimes depressing, sometimes hilarious and always bizarre. Whether losing a sheep's head during a dissection lesson because the students want to "make soup" or hearing from science teachers how Indian footballers were banned by FIFA for using juju magic to trick the opposition, Anthony fondly describes in hilarious detail experiences that are as unpredictable as they are fascinating. Anthony also describes wider truths about West African politics, history, culture and economics; about the corruptions and double standards within the development industry and how Ghanaians perceive the UK in particular and Europe in general. Global issues are highlighted such as Goldman Sachs profiting from the privatisation of Ghanaian gold mines and the family of one of the July 7th London bombers being from the small town of Bolgatanga - a bustling regional capital in the most optimistic of African nations. A keen musician, Anthony joined a group playing modernised traditional music at weddings, parties and, most importantly, funerals. Whether trying to convince the Regional Government Director for Culture that they are all under twenty-six or playing Michael Jackson on local radio, the trials, hopes and disappointments for TangaCulture trying to break into the Ghanaian music industry make "Spinal Tap" seem like an easy ride. This book paints a picture of an Africa generally ignored by the sensationalist or romanticised media but recognised and loved by all those who have visited this marvellous continent.

Book Description CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform. Paperback. Book Condition: New. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. 474 pages. Dimensions: 9.0in. x 6.0in. x 1.1in.With a naive sense of adventure and idealism, Anthony and his wife Laura, a teacher and a vet from Croydon, South London, volunteered with Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) in northern Ghana for two years a country they knew virtually nothing about beforehand. Their experiences were sometimes depressing, sometimes hilarious and always bizarre. Whether losing a sheeps head during a dissection lesson because the students want to make soup or hearing from science teachers how Indian footballers were banned by FIFA for using juju magic to trick the opposition, Anthony fondly describes in hilarious detail experiences that are as unpredictable as they are fascinating. The personalities of three characters run through this book - individuals that the author now describes as being among his closest friends. Kwesi the smooth-talker with big dreams and ideas. Despite humble beginnings and slender build, he likes to think of himself as a big man. His bravado and courage to improve his situation is inspiring. His quick-buck ideas are endearingly hilarious. Occasionally manipulative, mostly literate and always charming, Kwesi is typical of the rapidly expanding African lower-middle class. Culture is a part-time barber, tomato farmer, laborer, musician, witch doctor and full-time hustler. Culture has named himself in honour of his heritage and, despite not knowing the term pan-Africanist, sees himself as representing all African people. His worldview is mostly ill informed and stubbornly held. His only child being called Gaddafi perfectly summarises his often-surprising opinions. Donatus is a former goat-herder who was beaten by his father for wanting to go to school as a child. Running away from home, Donatus trained as a carpenter and now has a small but successful business. Living in a shared room with his extended family, Donatus is looking for a wife and is learning how to read and write. As a keen guitarist, Anthony joined with Kwesi, Culture and Donatus in their musical group - TangaCulture. Showcasing modernised traditional music, TangaCulture played at weddings, parties and, most importantly, funerals. The group also represented the Upper East Region in a national music competition held in Accra. Whether trying to convince the Regional Government Director for Culture that they are all under twenty-six or playing Michael Jackson on local radio, the trials, hopes and disappointments for TangaCulture trying to break into the Ghanaian music industry make Spinal Tap seem like an easy ride. This book paints a picture of an Africa generally ignored by the sensationalist or romanticised media but recognised and loved by all those who have visited this marvellous continent.
