In this concise and thoroughly researched work a unique and often overlooked aspect of the Third Reich is brought to light. The Third Reich really had two major land armed forces – the regular Army (Heer) bound by an oath to God to defend the German Reich and people and the Schutzstaffel (SS) which was bound by oath to effectively serve as Hitler’s private Army unto death. The relationship between these two forces was often troubled and cantankerous both before and during the Second World War, as well as on and off the battlefield of the grand struggle that eventually lead to the defeat of the Third Reich. Both of these organizations of military power would grow to epic proportions and nearly conqueror all of Europe. The SS would develop from its embryonic and disorganized conglomeration of units to produce some of the finest military fighting units of modern warfare, but will forever be tainted by its undeniable association with the worse acts of genocide in human history. The Army would be shattered and its high command humiliated by a failed coup d’état.
