Born during the dark days of segregation in the deep South and little opportunity for women of color, Juanita Edna Stokes, was determined to not let the turbulent times nor the sudden death of her beloved husband stop her from walking in her faith and purpose. Told from the memory of her granddaughter, Reverend Gwendolyn Andrews, "Grandma’s New Shoes" is the story of divine love, determination and the staying power of a pair of worn down brown shoes.

About the Author

Gwendolyn Andrews is a clinical social worker who has practiced in the field of Mental Health for over 29 years. She is an Assistant Professor at Virginia State University in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice. She received her three Masters degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University, George Washington University and Virginia Union University. After years as a practicing clinical social worker, training coordinator and a minister, she was spiritually prompted to write a book in gratitude to her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Juanita E. Stokes. For it was this grandmother who against all odds truly demonstrated the power and strength of a woman, the resiliency to never give up on your children and to know that one's faith must be the linkage to a fulfilled lifestyle. Like her grandmother and other strong women, Gwendolyn is proud to say she is a "spirit soul nurturer." She daily plants seeds of compassion, love, self-respect, joy, peace, forbearance, justice, kindness, gentleness, and empathy for others in the lives of children. As a strong advocate for children, she believes that every child has the capacity to succeed if they are nurtured in the proper "spirited soil" at an early age. She has used the tools that her grandmother demonstrated in her child-rearing practices to nurture children that others have given up on to witness them blossom into productive youngsters. When she isn't ministering, Mrs. Andrews spends time reading inspirational books and the Bible for spiritual guidance. She currently resides in Chesterfield County with her family and their dog Reese.
