9781523737895: The Irish-American Experience: Proletariat Research Papers

A collection of research papers from my days as an activist. I used to write many extremely opinionated things, in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, sometimes specifically because my whole family came from a working class heritage and I wanted to speak up for that social class. The more I researched social issues, however, the more I came to understand the depths to which no one can ever be an expert on anything. No one can guess what the consequences of a well-intentioned new initiative will be. And no one can keep any charitable organization truly honest. Over time, it seems, they are all subject to corruption (as with all human organizations). Learning more about history, charitable organizations, and, as I spent more time around those from middle and upper class backgrounds, seeing reverse-classism, I became both disillusioned with the non-profit industry and from the notion that any individual or group can really have the answers. Society, like each individual, is an ongoing project with no definitive conclusion. These essays are an education on the world, and humanity, as they were for me. And it’s at the end of this that I made my break from the non-profit industry and the obligation I felt to it, largely because of how I was raised. Here, where I became genuinely informed, is where I ended the path that had been laid down for me to follow and found my own path instead.
