Excerpt from Hand-Book of Pronunciation and Phonetic Analysis

No person can be sure of the pronunciation of a word as found in the dictionaries without possessing a knowledge of the elementary sounds of the language. These sounds, in turn, depend upon a knowledge of the meaning and use of the diacritical signs. The following table will serve to show the system of notation employed in this book, and also the systems employed by Webster and Worcester. Simple key-words have been chosen, such as are familiar to every English-speaking person. The three words at the end of the list, are, perhaps, exceptions. These are used to represent sounds heard in the pronunciation of certain classes of foreign words which are occasionally met with in books, newspapers, and magazines. For the peculiar sounds here employed, we have no English equivalents. The student desiring information or instruction on these few sounds, will find, in almost every community, persons of linguistic culture, or those of foreign birth and educa tion, who will be pleased to give the needed help.
