Synopsis

Excerpt from Overviews and Justifications for Low Gravity Experiments on Phase Transition and Critical Phenomena in Fluids

The diverse physical systems with critical points have a number of experimental properties in common near their respective critical points. They all exhibit a specific heat anomaly, long thermal relaxation times, a marked sensitivity to external fields and impurities, and the quality which is disappearing shows large long - lived fluctuations The density fluctuations in a pure fluid are responsible for the striking visual effects called critical opalescence. Analogous fluctuations in solid systems manifest themselves in ways such as enhanced neutron scattering, ultrasonic attenuation, and electrical resistivity.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the scientific questions at the intersection of fluid physics, solid state physics, and other areas of condensed matter science. The author reviews the latest scientific understandings of critical points and phase transitions in fluids and relates these to similar phenomena observed in solids. By inviting cross-disciplinary examination, the author reveals numerous analogical relationships that strengthen the scientific understanding of both fluids and solids. The concepts described in this book have potential engineering applications. For example, the insights revealed can be applied to the creation of more advanced equations of state for critical point phenomena and further the development of better correlations and predictive transport property equations. The author's insights will be of interest to a range of scientists from undergraduates and graduate students in physics to researchers in the fields of fluid dynamics, statistical mechanics, and condensed matter physics.
