Synopsis

Jean RACINE (1639-1699), fut éduqué par les jansénistes de Port Royal. Ses tragédies dérivent de plusieurs sources : « Andromaque » (1667), « Iphigénie » (1674) et « Phèdre » (1677), de la littérature latine et grecque ; « Britannicus » (1669), « Bérénice » (1670) et « Mithridate » (1673), de l´histoire romaine ; « Bajazet » (1672) de l´histoire turque contemporaine ; et « Esther » (1689) et « Athalie » (1691) de la Bible. Il écrivit aussi une comédie dans le style d´Aristophane, « Plaideurs » (1668). L´idée centrale de la majorité de ses tragédies est la perception de la folie aveugle de la passion humaine, asservie en permanence à la poursuite de ses objectifs et toujours vouée à l´échec.
