This book takes a different approach to help you capture the depth and drama of the scene in front of you. Instead of the "science" of stiff, mechanical perspective this book shows you how to look for and see depth "clues" and then how to use these depth "clues" to capture the depth in your drawings and paintings. We start by looking for "depth clues" in photographs of subjects that we commonly depict in our landscape and urban paintings -- trees, fences, roads, paths, rocks, and of course, structures. Not hard stiff office buildings but "artistic" structures such as falling down barns and Victorian houses. Then we give you examples of how to use these depth clues as you compose your paintings. Then we go another step and show you how to creatively use "depth clues" to add depth to otherwise "flat" scenes. The book is written for artists who work "en plein air" or use photographic references -- or both. Once you know the "clues" to look for you will readily discover these clues in your plein air scenes.

I believe that art should create an emotional response in the viewer and that the purpose of art is to transfer the emotion the artist feels to the viewer. The best compliment you can give my work is to view and my work and feel the emotion that I have tried to express. To express emotion you need "skill". A child beating on a piano may be expressing emotion but it is doubtful if this emotion will be transferred to the listener. To express your emotion you need to have the skill to "paint your emotions". And the more you know about your craft the better you can express your feelings. I have studied the technical aspects of art for many years -- not to show off my skill but to make better art. I learned the basics of depicting depth while studying engineering in school. I then attended art classes and workshop with numerous well know artists. I regularly attend life drawing classes at the University of California. I teach classes in drawing and drawing perspective to various art groups. I regularly display and sell my work in galleries and other exhibits and I am very active in numerous art groups and organizations. I am a signature member and serve on the board of directors of the Monterey Bay Plein Air Painters Association (MBPAPA)
