Most stories of criminals detail a life of crime. This is not one of those stories. The crimes for which Milton Brown was convicted of are not told in this book. He begins by detailing how his father separated him not just from his sisters and brothers, but from any hope of a normal childhood as well. As a child who lost all trust, he struggled to cope with all the hardships he was made to endure. During his decades long imprisonment, often in solitary confinement, he would eventually find hope by sharing his life experiences with young people at risk, and also by improving his mental health with the help of a few dedicated prison counselors. The autobiography of Milton Brown doesn’t fit the typical stereotype of what makes someone subject to imprisonment or how a criminal may turn his life around.

About the Author:

Milton Brown is the author of The Truth Raw and Uncut. He is from Lexington, Mississippi, Holmes County, and the youngest of six children, three boys and three girls. With the death of his parents at an early age, he began to spiral out of control when he was introduced to a life of crime. Selling drugs and hanging out with the wrong crowd became his way of life. He was a criminal in every sense of the word, and was eventually sentenced to a lengthy incarceration in Wisconsin. While in prison he dreamed that he wanted to change his life; the dream depicted him as a successful chef. He used this event as motivation to finish school, change his life, and get his degree in culinary arts. He aced the class in 2009 while in prison and became a certified cook – something he thought impossible. Currently, he is serving out his term and hopes to be released in the next several years.
