9781533509406: The Concealment (Monroe T. Lovett)

Revises 6, 2017   One man is found hangingfrom a tree. Another is passed out in the truck that holds the rope.

In this second big case for Defense Attorney Monroe T. Lovett, not everythingis what it seems on the surface. Lies and conspiracy fueled by a radical social zealot, a media looking for anything to fuel the fire and helpconvict the defendant, and hate groups marching and chanting in thestreets make things almost impossible for Monroeto find the truth. Even those closest to him question the innocence ofhis client, Ricky Magee.

Monroe will have to weave through racial tension mixed with murder and cover upall in the small Southern town as he defends his client, Ricky Magee, found at the crime scene in what appears to bean open and shut case against him. The evidence seems rock-solid. The victim isDemonte Williams, a young African-American man and supposed friend of Magee's.Groggy and claiming to have no memory of how he got there, Magee, who appearsto have been in a fight, maintains his innocence, despite the vast amount ofevidence to the contrary.

Nerves are on edge with the arrival of a national civil rights leader, Rev. CharlesLouis, who brings his personal brand ofjustice with him. He takes the Williams family under his arms as he calls forsupport and protests. Reverend Louis wants Magee prosecuted as a racist andlocal prosecutor Robert Breaux agrees, adding on a hate-crime charge.

Answering the Reverend's call, Peregrine's town square becomes the landing spotfor the KKK, Black Panthers and other racial activists, fanatics. Not to beoutdone, the national media enters the chaos, adding fuel to the fire. Why isthere such a strong reaction to a small-town murder? A local farmer finds DemonteWilliams hanging from a tree with a rope around his neck, and the other end ofthe rope tied to the bumper of RickyMagee's pickup truck.
Race quickly becomes thenumber one motive for Williams' death. However, as Monroe studies the evidence, he soon realizes something's notright, and getting to the truth will require risk, great risk.

This case causes tension between almost everyone involved. Debbie, Monroe'swife, questions him taking the case. Even Monroe's investigator, retired NewOrleans Police Detective Edward (Herm) Hermann, questions Magee's innocence.Across the aisle, the prosecution is butting heads with each other and withReverend Louis. Not to be left out, Judge Harper, an African-American, iscaught in the middle as he engages in an intense argument with Louis.

Needing this conviction, Reverend Louis paints a target on Monroe, trying to stophim by whatever means necessary. He needs Magee convicted of this crime.

A new face joins the prosecution. District Attorney Breaux has added a newassistant district attorney to his staff, Adrienne Scott. She's a headstrong ambitiousyoung lawyer who will do whatever it takes to reach her goal, especially if itmeans crushing Monroe Lovett. She sees Reverend Louis as vital to helping herachieve her success, and blurring the lines comes easy for her.

All hope seems lost for Magee as a mostly African American jury, and an AfricanAmeric judge tries him. He is ready to face his fate; however, the only thingkeeping him going is Monroe's assurance of uncovering the truth. That moment ofhope comes when someone offers a piece of evidence that can prove Magee'sinnocence. There's only one problem; the evidence is somewhere, hidden in thenotes and photographs of a conspiracy theorist, requiring Monroe, Debbie, andHerm to sift through them searching for the answers before time runs out in thetrial to save Magee from a death sentence.
