Sir Rupert, recently knighted and exiled to the remote English earldom of Northdale, strives to find a way to return the territory to prosperity in the face of Viking raids, royal neglect, and society’s contempt.
Northdale author Robert L. Nelis’s intriguing look at life at the end of the Dark Ages, explores the values of hard work and intelligence in a grim setting. Rupert’s progressive treatment of women and negotiation tactics with the Vikings earn him the ire of local leaders but the respect and loyalty of the commoners. Rupert and his wife, Sara, bring equality and peace to the domain and are rewarded for their loyalty and bravery by the king.
The couple’s strong personalities complement each other—a synergistic balance of male and female. Trust in the couple spreads throughout their land, but outside of Northdale opposition to their new approach to society arises. In spite of success, their triumphs do not last long. A coup and a fight for the throne could spell disaster for Northdale.
What will become of this newly resurrected community when its people are faced with a choice of surrender or siege by a seemingly unbeatable foe?
