A shocking tale of manipulation and revenge, Dangerous Liaisons follows the schemes of the Marquise du Merteuil against her former lover, the Vicomte de Valmont.

The pair of aristocrats vie for supremacy in manipulating others; employing seduction and temptation as their weapons, their aim is to disgrace others in the eyes of upper class French society. For her part, Merteuil is determined to sully the reputation of the young Cécile, who has hitherto led a pure life in a convent. Both Cécile and her love interest, music tutor Chevalier Danceny, are unwittingly employed in the cruel schemes of Merteuil and Valmont. What follows is a tension packed story of amorality, deception, jealousy and disgrace.

The story is entirely told through correspondences between the characters, whereby the narrative and events unfold. This format, which mimics the manner in which the reigning French aristocracy would communicate, acted to further stoke the controversy and reaction to the novel when it was originally published in the 1780s.

This translation by Thomas Moore is faithful to the original text, and continues to be considered the authoritative English rendition of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos infamous novel.

From the Back Cover:
The complex moral ambiguities of seduction and revenge make Les Liaisons dangereuses (1782) one of the most scandalous and controversial novels in European literature. Its prime movers, the Vicomte de Valmont and the Marquise de Merteuil, gifted, wealthy, and bored, form an unholy alliance and turn seduction into a game - a game which they must win. And they play with such wit and style that it is impossible not to admire them - until they discover that the game has mysterious rules that they cannot understand. In the ensuing vicious battle there can be no victors, and the innocent will suffer with the guilty. This new translation gives Laclos a modern voice, and readers will be able to judge whether the novel is as 'diabolical' and 'infamous' as its critics have claimed, or whether it has much to tell us about the kind of world we ourselves live in.
About the Author:
Pierre Ambrose Francois Choderlos De Laclos was born in 1741, in Amiens. His family was respectable but not distinguished, and at eighteen he entered the army and spent the next twenty years in various garrison towns, and reached the rank of capitaine-commandant without ever seeing battle. He cut a dash in provincial society, however, and in his spare time wrote light verse, some of which was published. In 1779 he was sent to the island of Aix, off La Rochelle, where Les Liaisons Dangereuses was conceived and written. He went to Paris in 1781 to supervise the publishing of his book, overstayed his leave and was promptly ordered back to his regiment. He married Marie-Solange Duperre in 1786 and proved to be an exemplary husband and father. He lfet the army in 1788, entering politics, and was imprisoned twice during the Reign of Terros, but returned to the army as a general under Napoleon in 1800. He died in Italy in 1803. Laclos also wrote a treatise on the education of women and on Vauban. Towards the end of his life he was considering writing another one to show that true happiness could only be attained in family life.
