Gene Stratton-Porter was an American author and naturalist. Stratton-Porter was also famous for being one of the first women to create a movie studio and production company. With the income she earned from bestsellers such as A Girl of the Limberlost and Freckles, Stratton-Porter provided support to the conservation of Limberlost Swamp and other areas in the state of Indiana. Freckles is a novel that is set in the Limberlost Swamp area of Indiana. The story centers around a young Irish man with red hair and freckles who was raised in a Chicago orphanage.
