Volume 1 (Genesis to Psalms) of the Frisian Holy Bible, Wumkes translation of 1943. Wumkes followed closely the Dutch Statenvertaling 1637 Bible and the English King James Bible. The Wumkes New Testament was printed first in 1933, and the complete Bible in 1943. As an act of resistance against the German occupier, the whole first edition was sold out in one day. Over 40,000 copies were printed until the 1960s. Then Frisian churches decided that it was time to replace the Wumkes translation with a very corrupted, ecumenical bible in 1978. Frisian is a North Sea Germanic language spoken by at least 500,000 people, mostly in Northern Netherlands, and some in Germany.
