For two decades Greece has held Macedonia hostage over its name. In the 1990's Greece imposed an embargo on the Macedonian people and in the 2000's they blocked Macedonia's integration into Europe. After breaking off peacefully from Yugoslavia, Macedonia was flung into a vulnerable position by their southern Greek neighbors. But Greece's reckless behavior is not new. Throughout the 1800's they aspired to wrestle Macedonia away from the Ottoman Empire, and in 1913 they teamed up with Serbia and Bulgaria to split Macedonia into three pieces. Since the division of Macedonia, Greece has pursued a policy of intimidation and discrimination intended to sentence the Macedonians to nonexistence. This book examines the history of Greece's dispute with Macedonia and explores why Macedonia must not be forced to change its name and abandon its identity in order to appease Greece's sensitivities to ancient history.
