People ask whether islands attract a certain kind of person or create them. Thirty years into my one-man study, I think it's both but heavily skewed toward the latter. I had romantic ideas about island life, and a touch of impulsiveness. I thought there was something wholesome and intimate here and wanted to find it. Moving to Whidbey Island was not the smartest thing to do while still tied to a demanding job in the city. But if you want something badly enough, you do what it takes. I found what I was seeking, just not in the places I expected it to be. I discovered not only the joy of neighbors in a small community but also the reassuring constancy of wildlife neighbors in my forest setting. Thirty years later, I think my reckless move was the most brilliant and inspired decision of a lifetime. It defined who I am.
