From The New England Journal of Medicine:
Chronic obstructive lung disease, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is characterized by progressive limitation of airflow due to inflammation of small airways and fibrosis and destruction of lung parenchyma (emphysema). The principal cause of the disease is cigarette smoking. The prevalence of COPD and the mortality associated with it are increasing worldwide; the disease is now the fourth leading cause of death in the world. Bench and bedside research on COPD have been neglected, and a nihilistic attitude concerning its management prevails. Nevertheless, interest in the disease is growing, and the publication of Chronic Obstructive Lung Diseases is very much welcomed. The book contains 29 chapters written by well-known authorities and covers the most important aspects of the disease. Chapters on epidemiology, pathology, and pathogenesis are followed by chapters on clinical aspects and management of the disease. The book also contains two chapters on diseases other than COPD that cause airflow limitation. Chronic Obstructive Lung Diseases should appeal to clinicians with a specific interest in COPD and to researchers entering the field, because it is a good and readable account of our current knowledge. Now that the pace of basic and clinical research on COPD has quickened, some chapters will soon become outdated. Even so, this book is a good state-of-the-art review of our current knowledge. It comes with a CD-ROM that contains the full text of the book. Romain Pauwels, M.D., Ph.D.
