9781550652208: Rather Laugh than Cry: Stories from a Hassidic Household

Written by a Hassidic mother of 12, this autobiography provides a revealing look at the daily life of a contemporary, Hassidic Jewish family. Alien yet familiar, the stories, written over the course of more than a dozen years, clearly show that for all of the community’s rejection of conventional clothing, radio, and television, the lives of Hassidic women are not so different from the lives of those outside their group. While the different standards assigned to women in tightly-knit Hassidic society are explored, women from a variety of backgrounds will identify with the author’s poignant tales of fighting teenagers for the telephone, teaching a child how to care for a pet, and raising a large family while running a household.

About the Author:

Malka Ziporah is a pseudonym. She has published more than 100 short stories in Orthodox Jewish magazines. She lives in Montreal, Québec.

From Booklist:

Malka Ziporah is the pseudonym of a Montreal Hassidic woman who has raised a family of 12 children. She was born in Israel to Hungarian parents who survived the Holocaust. Written with a sense of humor, her stories reflect Ziporah's family life: passing on clothes from one child to the another, enforcing the children's bedtime, getting them off to school, baking challah bread for the Sabbath, tolerating tantrums, dealing with the cold, and observing Jewish holidays, weddings, and bar mitzvahs. Ziporah agonizes over the few chances she has to use the phone and the frustration in trying to learn the computer. Her personal observations of family life are familiar to all of us, and that's what makes the stories so enjoyable. Cohen, George
