Elizabeth MacLeod has written many children's books, including nine titles in the Snapshots Biography series, numerous titles in the Kids Can Read, Kids Books Of and Kids Can Do It series, Why Do Horses Have Manes?, What Did Dinosaurs Eat?, and Monster Fliers. She lives in Toronto.

Gr 3-6-This highly pictorial introduction to the famous Canadian author assumes that readers are familiar with Montgomery's works, but is formatted for a younger audience. Thirteen double-page chapters tell her story. Historical facts about the times are interspersed with information about the writer and mention is made of the things that happened to her that are paralleled in her characters' lives. Captioned illustrations, photographs, and quotations fill each right-hand page and spot art and reproductions add additional snippets of information. Students who are looking for report information on someone famous will be satisfied with this slim biography. However, readers who know and love Montgomery's books will want more than is available in this cursory overview. Introduce them to Catherine M. Andronik's Kindred Spirit: A Biography of L. M. Montgomery, Creator of Anne of Green Gables (Atheneum, 1993). The author of the beloved Anne of Green Gables is paid tribute in Lucy Maud Montgomery: A Writer's Life by Elizabeth MacLeod, in the same format as her previous Alexander Graham Bell. In addition to learning about the author's early life growing up on Prince Edward Island, fans of Anne can see the house that served as model for Green Gables, and will see that the author had much in common with her fictitious heroine. Gr. 3-5. This brief, illustrated biography is similar in format to MacLeod's Alexander Graham Bell (1999). It introduces one of Canada's most famous writers. Period photos in black-and-white as well as color pictures of sites, artifacts, and books illustrate the text. Though somewhat busy visually, this presentation offers a good biographical overview, studded with vivid details. MacLeod gives a clear sense of Montgomery's life and shows how she wove certain parts of her own history into her fiction.
