Gr 2-5-Sam, who considers herself a talented dog detective, is able to communicate with Jennie, the girl who lives next door, by putting thoughts into her head. When Jennie's family wins an all-expense paid weekend at the exclusive Grand Hotel, the sheepdog is only too happy to tag along. The establishment allows dogs, but Jennie and her best friend are warned to keep Sam on a leash, and the cantankerous canine will have none of that. Soon after arriving at the hotel, her snooping lands all three in the middle of a dangerous mystery. The plot is weak and the dog's insistence on ordering strange meals from room service (e.g., apple pie with shrimp) becomes less humorous with repetition. Still, young mystery lovers who have always wanted to talk to their pets and fans of the previous books will enjoy Sam's antics and the surprise conclusion.-Amy Stultz, Leesburg Public Library, FL
