Amanda Lewis is a children's author, teacher and calligrapher. She lives in southern Ontario.
From Booklist:Gr. 3-6. This attractive, large-format book presents craft projects from five paper-art categories: folding, cutting, weaving, paper gluing, and papermaking. In the introduction, Lewis identifies various types of paper and cardboard and discusses the qualities of each one. She explains techniques of scoring, folding, gluing, pressing, and cutting paper that lead to good results. In the chapters that follow, the spacious page design allows plenty of room for instructions and illustrations that show every step needed for success. Rather than sticking to a rigid, one-project-per-spread layout, the book presents projects in one, two, or three pages, depending on their complexity. Ideas include making butterfly ornaments, kirigami (cut-paper) cards, and a Frisbee-like flying paper disk. Each presentation includes a list of materials, step-by-step directions, and colorful, attractive illustrations that show the process as well as the finished project. Printed on good paper and more sturdily bound than most paperbacks, this appealing and practical book clearly explains how to make craft projects that actually look worth the effort. Carolyn Phelan
