A talented storyteller, Schulze (Home to Eden) nevertheless delivers a lukewarm story about two young people who have been emotionally crippled by unloving parents. Maggie Drummond has spent her life trying to gain acceptance from her uncaring mother, and Ryan Lassite was abandoned by his jet-setting parents and raised by his paternal grandfather. The two meet when Maggie's car breaks down on a lonely stretch of Wyoming road and Ryan, returning home from the rodeo circuit, comes to the rescue. Pressured by his grandfather to marry and settle down, Ryan proposes after only a few innocent encounters; Maggie, under the thumb of her own family, agrees to marry him. Right after the ceremony, Maggie has misgivings about her quickie Las Vegas elopement, and the couple soon begins to confront the baggage of their pasts. A more in-depth exploration of minor characters?such as Maggie's sister?would have added welcome intensity to the plot. Though anticlimactic, Schulze's newest offers a quick evening's read.

Set in a small, close-knit town in the vast expanse of Wyoming ranch country, this tale brings together two good-hearted but lonely young people. Ryan, a handsome cowboy recuperating at his grandfather's ranch from his most recent injury on the rodeo circuit, is instantly infatuated with shy but caring Maggie and her imperfect but endearing smile. When he asks her to marry him, she is too surprised to let her levelheaded good sense rein her in, and they run off to Las Vegas. But after returning home as a married couple, they experience far more tension in their relationship than they had anticipated. They have to work through an assortment of emotional scars, family problems, and personal issues on their way to falling fully and openly into love and marriage, an unusual twist to the love-first, marriage-second scenario of most sweet romances. Schulze's popularity will draw readers to this western love story, and they will not be disappointed. Catherine Sias
