From AudioFile

After being expelled from school, Helen decides to ignore her aunt's wishes and sets off to reunite with her friend Jake. Together they search for her father while traveling throughout Europe in their quest to understand the mysteries surrounding the Philospher's Stone. Colin Moody breathes a tone of proper demeanor and determination into Helen, a characterization that contrasts aptly with Jake's lower-class Scots brogue and immaturity. In his narrative passages, Moody proves his skill by rendering the story in a well-paced but gentle manner that is apt to be more appealing to younger listeners while still engaging older ones. Paperback. Condition: 2003. A near fine copy. 2006. The Stone of Sorrow begins some months after the end of The Secret of the Achemist in Provence. A new mix of strange characters and weird events brings Jake and Helen together again: this time they are further along the way to understanding the true power of The Philospher's Stone: life eternal. Yet others seek it too: the face-shifting Zoe and the counterfeit teacher, Macintosh Raeburn; the blood-chilling Doctor Negulescu, deceased but controlled by another through the art of metempsychosis; and the horrifying, centuries-old Draganu. From its beginning long ago in the Italian town of Ferrara to its startling climax in an ancient underground palace in Istanbul, this is an unforgettable, page-turner of a tale.
