Synopsis

It is the worst winter Israel has ever seen: month after month of unrelenting cold, punctuated by bursts of freezing rain, hail, even snow—almost unknown in this arid land. Israel’s economy is suffering an all-time low, and those who are poor have little recourse for dealing with the unexpected winter. The cold has brought with it a string of new viruses; even the wealthy are not immune to the "Saudi flu," which often proves deadly. And amidst all the natural disasters, a series of very unnatural events is unfolding: terrorist attacks, suicide bombings, roadside ambushes, booby-trapped cars. Within this highly charged setting, Adir Bergson, independently wealthy thanks to his hard-working mother, leads a privileged existence, wallowing in self-indulgent introspection while Kati Beit- Halahmi, wife and mother of four, tries to keep her family afloat in conditions of abject poverty. Iris Ventura, divorced from an unfaithful husband, and stripped of much of her former wealth, struggles to provide a comfortable existence for her three children, while bemoaning the loss of her one true love, Adir. Throughout, the president of the country drifts in his official car from one highly publicized condolence visit to the next. With the lyrical style, wry humour, and depth of feeling only a masterful writer can offer, Human Parts follows the lives of these characters as they struggle through the long, debilitating winter and the daily threat of terrorism and disease, ultimately discovering the power of the individual human spirit in the face of disaster.
