SANDRA DIERSCH has taught writing courses to British Columbia students and aspiring adult writers. She has written eight books to date, including Offside! and Home Court Advantage, both Canadian Children's Book Centre Our Choice selections. She lives in Maple Ridge, B.C., with her husband and young daughter.
When Alex accidentally sees a friend’s father cheating on his wife, he is devastated, since the man is head of the parish council at Alex’s church. This sets the Canadian teen to wondering how many of the people he knows at church are hiding secrets or living lies. There is worse to come, however, when his younger brother then comes out to him, and Alex is forced to confront not only his crisis of faith but his homophobia as well. Yes, Diersch overloads her slender narrative with too many problems and lessons, ones that most readers of YA fiction will already be familiar with. That said, the author does a nice job with characterization, writes smoothly, and manages to infuse her story with enough suspense to hold her readers’ attention. This is a volume in the SideStreets series of high/low titles, which compare favorably with Orca’s well-established and widely used Soundings series. Grades 8-12. --Michael Cart
