Michael O'Reilly is the shortest kid on the lacrosse team, and the youngest. He doesn't play rough, and everyone says he's not tough enough for the sport. When tension breaks out between teams and one team accuses the other of racist behavior, Michael realizes that he is tough after all—he's the only one brave enough to speak the truth.

He is also the author of Corner Kick. He lives in Courtice, Ontario with his wife and daughter. From Booklist:
Michael Reilly is the smallest member of his Canadian traveling lacrosse team, the Thunder. This means that he isn't well respected by his fellow team members, especially Vince, the team bully. While wandering around town between games during an important tournament, the Thunder ends up in a scuffle with another team. Because the other team is made up of members of a First Nations tribal group, the adults assume that the fight was racially motivated, and the Thunder is faced with a suspension. Fortunately, Michael is a skilled diplomat, and he makes the tournament officials see the truth. When the big game finally arrives, Vince, now a member of the Michael fan club, convinces the coach that the team needs Michael's speed, and the Thunder wins, thanks to Michael's talents. Despite the formulaic plot, lacrosse fans will enjoy the action, and those not familiar with the sport will benefit from the brief, appended description. Joseph Bruchac's The Warriors (2003) delivers a more complicated plot that is also centered on a lacrosse team. Grades 4-7. --Todd Morning
