Jimmy Allen Davis was born in Augsburg, Germany in 1977. He spent many years abroad with his U.S. military family, living in and visiting France, Italy, Spain and many other countries. He was introduced to a computer at five and was soon writing his first programs at six. He has done work for companies like Gateway Computers, NASA, and Ameritech and has won numerous awards and honors. I decided to compile this little collection of programs with explanations on how they function for the good students in a math/engineering/physics curriculum. I mostly focus on math, since I find that most students have problems in this sometimes abstract field. This is done mostly because all complex fields such as physics, engineering and chemistry derive most of their methods from the field of mathematics. I pepper some other field programs throughout this book in order to try and break the monotony of math, math, math.
The programs in this book are meant to supplement your own talents in your studies and should not be wholly relied upon to get you through a college course. In fact, I do not recommend using the programs unless you have mastered the topic this have been written for. I frequently use programs to solve quadratic equations or perform a determinant on tests, but only because I am in some higher level courses and I know how to perform these tasks well. I donated some of these programs to help other students and because they relied on them completely. they later got burned because of their lack of knowledge. Consider this a warning if you intend on relying on your calculator throughout the course of your studies and plan on making no effort in learning the material yourself.
I recommend learning how to program your calculator yourself. After you master that skill, you will not require this program collection too much, as you will be able to put the program together yourself. Besides, programmers are more usedful than non-programmers in any field. They are better able to complete tasks both in terms of efficiency and deadlines.
For teachers, I suggest perusing this book and learning what a TI-89 can do. Tell your students which programs you will allow them to use on a test, but I suggest for the sake of academic integrity not to allow them to use skills directly taught in your course. Allowing students of algebra through calculus level programs is okay if they are in a graduate class for boundary value problems and should not waste time performing tasks they already know how to do. But a freshman calculus course should only allow algebra, trigonometry and maybe pre-cal. This allows them to focus on more new material and thus expose college students to a broader swath of the field.
Finally, for those of you who are already avid TI-89 programmers, congratulations. I recommend browsing this book for code that you do not feel like writing yourself. Feel free to change the code to suit your own needs. If you prefer another programmable calculator, this book can still be used as a guide for what steps should be taken to achieve the end result.
