A beautifully illustrated reference to more than 100 flowering plant families.

Flowering Plants: A Pictorial Guide to the World's Flora is a comprehensive source of botanical information. More than 100 flowering plant families are profiled with authoritative text and featured in more than 700 beautiful artworks.

The book is divided into the two flowering plant groups: the dicotyledons, or dicots, which typically have two leaves in the seed's embryo, and the monocotyledons, or monocots, which typically have one leaf in the seed's embryo. This handsome reference includes familiar ornamentals, such as carnations, begonias and daffodils, as well as plants that are not as well known for their flowers, such as milkweed, ginseng and tea.

Each entry is presented across two or more pages and includes a full page of detailed color illustrations that show the plant's anatomy, with all parts labeled in Latin and English. The expert text describes the plant's physical features, distribution and economic uses. Also included is a classification list of all plant families.

An easily navigated reference, Flowering Plants: A Pictorial Guide to the World's Flora is ideal for gardeners, horticulturalists and anyone interested in botany.

Review:

[A] beautifully illustrated, handy-sized volume.... Carefully wrought color illustrations by botanical artists assist greatly in identification.--Marilyn K. Alaimo"Chicago Botanic Garden" (06/30/2011)

This volume is an excellent way to learn about plant relationships.--Joel Lerner"Durham Herald-Sun" (03/21/2011)

In this beautifully illustrated, handy-size volume, more than one hundred of the major plant families are described and located around the world. The individual descriptions focus on family characteristics and key features, economic uses, and the carefully wrought color illustrations by botanical artists for ease in identification. Among the appendix features can be found a glossary, an index, and the latest classification of 413 families that are recognized by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group.

The numerous full-color and two-color drawings for each were rendered by botanical artists, are both attractive and detailed, and have identifying captions. At the end of the book, the reader will find an up-to-date APGIII classification list (based on the new DNA-sequencing data).--Lori D. Kranz"American Reference Books Annual 2012" (04/01/2012)

If your interests in botany extend beyond your own garden into the wider world of plants, Flowering Plants would be a valuable addition to your gardening library.--Edith Trolano"Washington Gardener" (02/01/2012)

In this beautifully illustrated, handy-sized volume, more than 100 of the major plant families are described and positioned around the world. The individual descriptions focus on family characteristics, key features, and economic uses. Carefully wrought color illustrations by botanical artists assist greatly in identification. In the appendix, the reader will find a glossary, index, and the latest classification of 413 families as recognized by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group.--Marilyn K. Alaimo"Chicago Botanic Garden" (06/30/2011)

Flowering Plants: A Pictorial Guide to the World's Flora," has more than 700 detailed color illustrations and interpretations of plants listed by family. Illustrations throughout the book explain the story of each plant, the type of flower, plant similarities and differences, and the general distribution of plant habitats. This volume is an excellent way to learn about plant relationships. For example, some plants can be members of the same family but look completely different from one another.--Joel Lerner"Durham Herald-Sun" (03/21/2011)

Overall, this is a beautiful book to review in both content and layout... The numerous plant illustrations are well placed, detailed, and large enough to discern essential plant features. The book is visually appealing... and the overall layout is clean and reader friendly. It is also reasonably priced. As an introduction to the world's flowering plant families, I can think of no better book. This would make an excellent gift to any plant lover and an excellent way to introduce someone into plant family classification. For those more familiar with taxonomy, it is still worth the purchase to have something more condensed than the Heywood book... It is a delight to own and read.--Don Rost"Economic Botany, Vol. 66(1), pp. 99-109" (01/01/2012)

If you love plants, you'll enjoy dipping into this compendium of plant facts... The 700 illustrations...are lovely and may be the most appealing feature for many readers. Each plant family is accompanied by full-page illustrations of the plant's anatomy, with each part labeled... Classification organizes plants according to DNA sequencing. Further Resources lists scholarly publications on plant families. The glossary would be essential for all but botanists, and the index lists both the Latin and the English plant names. If your interests in botany extend beyond your own garden... Flowering Plants would be a valuable addition to your gardening library.--Edna Troiano"Washington Gardener" (03/01/2012)
