In all six of its volumes The Broadview Anthology of British Literature presents British literature in a truly distinctive light. Fully grounded in sound literary and historical scholarship, the anthology takes a fresh approach to many canonical authors, and includes a wide selection of work by lesser-known writers. The anthology also provides wide-ranging coverage of the worldwide connections of British literature, and it pays attention throughout to issues of race, gender, class, and sexual orientation. It includes comprehensive introductions to each period, providing in each case an overview of the historical and cultural as well as the literary background. It features accessible and engaging headnotes for all authors, extensive explanatory annotations, and an unparalleled number of illustrations and contextual materials. Innovative, authoritative and comprehensive, The Broadview Anthology of British Literature has established itself as a leader in the field.

The full anthology comprises six bound volumes, together with an extensive website component; the latter has been edited, annotated, and designed according to the same high standards as the bound book component of the anthology, and is accessible by using the passcode obtained with the purchase of one or more of the bound volumes.

The two-volume Broadview Anthology of British Literature: Concise Edition provides an attractive alternative to the full six-volume anthology. Though much more compact, the Concise Edition nevertheless provides instructors with substantial choice, offering both a strong selection of canonical authors and a sampling of lesser-known works. With an unparalleled number of illustrations and contextual materials, accessible and engaging introductions, and full explanatory annotations, this edition of the acclaimed Broadview Anthology provides concise yet wide-ranging coverage for British literature survey courses.

Sylvia Townsend Warner, Stevie Smith, J.M. Coetzee, Eavan Boland, and Zadie Smith are among those given full author entries for the first time. There are also new selections by a number of authors who were already included in the anthology―among them Seamus Heaney, Margaret Atwood, and Carol Ann Duffy. There are new contextual materials as well―including material on “The Natural, the Supernatural, and the Sublime” in the Age of Romanticism section, and material on “The New Art of Photography” in The Victorian Era. The new edition concludes with a new section offering a range of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction prose under the heading “Literature, Politics, and Cultural Identity in the Late Twentieth- and Early Twenty-first Centuries.”

The Concise edition will also now include a substantial website component, providing for much greater flexibility. And an increasing number of works from the full six-volume anthology (or from its website component) are being made available in stand-alone Broadview Anthology of British Literature editions. (Tennyson’s In Memoriam, for example, which was previously included in these pages, will now be available both as part of a stand-alone Broadview Anthology of British Literature edition of Tennyson’s selected poetry and as part of the website component of the anthology’s Concise Edition.)

Review:

Praise for the Broadview Anthology of British Literature, Concise

“I switched to using the Broadview Anthology of British Literature, Concise B years ago because it best models up-to-date and wonderfully circumspect ways of reading British writing since Blake. New majors are productively engaged and excited by the volume’s fine introductions, contexts sections, installments on the history of the English language and extended resources on the website; I can let them loose in a (wide) terrain that I know is well set-out, subtly teaching them by example how to start up research as well as how to think about abyssal concepts like “modernity” or “Britishness.” I’m myself excited by the whole Broadview project, which exhibits deep commitment to dynamism in its ongoing revisions―like the new Concise B―improved through the involvement of advice from forward-thinking scholars at every level. I discuss that project with my students, who come to understand their purchased anthologies as “the study of literature in process”―a phrase wherein all the nouns interact.” ― Romana Huk, University of Notre Dame

“I am pleased to say that my students and I really enjoyed using The Broadview Anthology of British Literature, Concise Edition this past fall and spring semesters in my survey of British literature. ... The final average of my spring survey class was one of the highest in my teaching career, and I am sure that the Broadview anthology was one of the many reasons for this excellent performance. My students were also excited about the Broadview editions of Frankenstein and Tess of the D’Urbervilles that we used.” ― Richard Branyon, Eastern Connecticut University

“I have just reviewed the introductory material to The Broadview Anthology of British Literature, and I am very impressed. I find the introductions to be democratic in their scope and selection of topics. The anthology as a whole is not a list of ‘greatest hits,’ but rather a measured look at the enduring classics as well as forgotten, but important, literary movements and figures. ... A wealth of cultural and historical information is provided, and students will surely finish these introductory pieces with a profound lesson: context matters. The introductory essays show subtle expertise ... The editors bring British literary tradition to life with color illustrations and visual materials [and] bring readers beyond the stereotypes of each era and into a rich world where the past comes alive.” ― Wendy Nielsen, Montclair State University

Comments on The Broadview Anthology of British Literature:

“ ... sets a new standard by which all other anthologies of British Literature will now have to be measured.” ― Graham Hammill, SUNY Buffalo

“With the publication of the Broadview Anthology of British Literature, teachers and students in survey and upper-level undergraduate courses have a compelling alternative to the established anthologies by Norton and Longman. ... This is a very real intellectual, as well as pedagogical, achievement.” ― Nicholas Watson, Harvard University

“ ... an excellent anthology. Good selections for my purposes (including some nice surprises), just the right level of annotation, affordable―and a hit with my students. I will definitely use it again.” ― Ira Nadel, University of British Columbia
