Grade 3-5-- More entries in a large look-alike series, each combining a lucid essay with plenty of color paintings and photos. Asimov often has a particular point to make; in Astronomy Today he emphasizes the role amateur sky-watchers play in astronomical research, and he expects that Colonizing the Planets and Stars will take millions of years. The information in Comets and Meteors can readily be found elsewhere; Mythology and the Universe covers astrology, constellations, superstitious responses to comets and eclipses, the zodiac, pole stars, and people in the moon (whew!). Hard facts about Pluto are few and far between, although intriguing enough. Despite misquoting Neil Armstrong in Piloted Space Flights --"one small step for man" rather than "a man," a moot but significant omission--Asimov has a well-deserved reputation for accuracy, and a talent for simplifying, without over-simplifying, difficult or technical subjects. Rather than the usual portraits of Copernicus and Galileo, readers of Astronomy Today are introduced to Leslie Peltier and Dr. Jocelyn Bell Brunell. Glossaries and address lists are all similar, and the bibliographies largely self-referential, but a "fact-file" spread enhances each volume: a list of space camps in Piloted Space Flights ; of recently-named constellations ("Bufo, The Toad") in Mythology and the Universe ; of high points in the discovery and use of the spectrum in Astronomy Today. The illustrations, captions, boxed asides, and back matter range from pleasantly imaginative to unabashed filler. A step above the "New True Books" (Childrens) in reading and information levels, these expertly supplement and update the basic titles of Seymour Simon, Heather Couper, et al. --John Peters, New York Public Library
