Grade 2-- Two original pour quoi tales that seem artificial even though the lessons are an outgrowth of present-day culture. Enoch Emu wants to hang around the men's club and leave domestic drudgery and child rearing to his wife, but when she abandons him he learns the joys of fatherhood. Samantha Seagull experiments with various footwear in order to be special but only embarrasses herself into a permanent blush. A page of factual information that follows the stories tells about male birds who care for their young and birds that change color when they grow up. The watercolors are fairly realistic in portraying the animals, except for their clothing and humorous expressions on their faces. They have a bright, breezy quality that is attractive until it is weighted down by the stories' lessons. Enoch the Emu shows its Australian origin in its setting, but the seacoast where Samantha lives is more generic. There are already innumerable picture books about the consequences of wanting to be different, and Dr. Seuss has dealt with the surrogate mother far better in Horton Hatches the Egg (Random, 1940) .
