A significant contribution to educational reform literature. It offers an insightful, research-based analysis of the problems in education and a compelling vision for change. Schools of Hope will stand with the best works of Ernest Boyer, Ted Sizer, and John Goodlad.
?Gary M. Doyle, deputy superintAndent, Bloomfield Hills Schools
Schools of Hope proposes specific principles for creating classrooms that educate both the minds and hearts of today's students, teaching them to be reflective and self-educating.

Schools of Hope was given the American Educational Studies Association 1994 Critics' Choice award for its outstanding contribution to educational studies. Educators and parents concerned about their schools and the attributes to look for when choosing schools for their children will find the book of special interest. From the Author:
The underlying assumption of the book that educating only for academic excellence does not contribute to becoming a successful and fulfilled adult was based on longitudinal studies of how adolescents grow into late middle age. SAT scores and academic grades did not predict any of hundreds of measures of adult success, well-being and virtue. Psychological maturity did. Congruent with most educational philosophers' as well as teachers' views, I have claimed schools must educate for the strengths that we now know actually do contribute to later success and well-being. Academic excellence depends, in fact, upon character maturation.
I have provided a research-based rationale for organizing schools as well as for using strategies to create maturing classroom environments without diluting one whit the integrity of the academic process. I illustrate the application of such principles by many examples of school and classroom organization.
