Synopsis
Boston physician and obstetrician Walter Channing attended thousands of women in childbirth between 1810 and 1860. In this biography, Kass (history of medicine, Harvard Medical School) describes events from Channing's private and professional life. Topics include, for example, Channing's work as a physician at Boston's general hospital, his editorship of the New England Journal of Medicine and Surgery , his advocacy for the use of anesthesia, and his participation in social reform movements. About the Author
Amalie M. Kass is Lecturer on the History of Medicine in the Department of Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She is the coauthor of Perfecting the World: The Life and Times of Thomas Hodgkin, M.D. and the author of numerous journal articles, encyclopedic entries, and book reviews. She lives in the Boston area.
