This index to more than 1,600 fingerplays in 60 books is a useful resource for preschool and kindergarten teachers, day-care staff, and children's librarians. The main index is arranged by the complete first line of the fingerplay, with codes for the sources in which it can be found (bibliographic information for these codes is in the bibliography) and subjects relating to it. Fingerplays in a foreign language are marked with an asterisk, the foreign language is identified, and a translation of the first line is provided. Two subject indexes list the fingerplays by broad subject and by narrow subject. In the first subject index, for example, under Occupations, the user will find references to Astronauts, Carpenters, Clowns, etc., followed by a list of entry numbers referring back to the main index. Special indexes include "Fingerplays for Calendar Days," which lists fingerplays to celebrate special events throughout the school year, and "Fingerplays of Letter Days," focusing on specific letters of the alphabet.
Although this book is comprehensive in coverage, with fingerplays representing 11 languages and 25 countries, the user can be overwhelmed moving from the subject index to the main index to the bibliography. Plays for Children and Young Adults [RBB Ap 15 91] also includes fingerplays, but the Neal-Schuman Index is an inexpensive purchase for those early-learning professionals who incorporate fingerplays into their lessons. From Scientific American:
Librarians and teachers in preschools, kindergartens, elementary schools, Sunday schools, and day-care centers will be interested in this new index to fingerplays....a useful tool.
