Young adults may be the toughest audience on Earth. Can librarians successfully use booktalks with teenagers who have grown up in today's multimedia-led world? This work discusses what teens want; how booktalkers can choose the right books; and booktalking basics. It includes sample booktalks.

From Booklist:

Practical, smart, hip, and irreverent, this guide to booktalking for reluctant readers shows and tells how to reach "today's media-savvy, plugged-in teens." Forget the traditional long booktalk. Forget reading aloud. Broman's talks are sound bites that relate to pop culture and current events. She draws on her personal experience as a YA public librarian in suburban Chicago, booktalking to YA classes for whom reading is decidedly not cool. Excellent do's and don'ts include tips on how to keep in touch with the teen world (which magazines to read, etc.) and steps for preparing highly personal, interactive presentations. She includes sample, ready-to-present talks, admits that she sometimes cheats (she hasn't always read the book she presents), and openly pushes quick reads that appeal because they're short and have lots of illustrations. The only old-fashioned note is that popular in this case doesn't appear to include much cultural diversity. However, Broman does speak with sensitivity about the need to cover a wide variety in culture, sexual orientation, etc. A fun read that will encourage you to find your own personal style. From School Library Journal:

Ideas for understanding the culture of today's youth, identifying their interests, and relating to the video-game generation are presented in a breezy, conversational style. Research is cited about teen reading habits and preferences, and about the most popular genres. Adult reference sources are given at the end of each chapter along with YA books mentioned. The chapter on choosing books identifies methods for the utilization of the Internet, and considerations selecting various genres. Techniques for booktalking cover such aspects as obtaining self-confidence, dealing with disruptions, and what to say (and not to say). "Seven Surefire Booktalking Methods" includes how to set a scene, ask a question, draw connections, focus on a character, hint at the plot, etc. The dos and don'ts outline pitfalls to avoid and tips to follow in working with an audience. Samples include bibliographic information, genre, and grade level. Booktalks utilizing other styles provide different approaches. A list of sources and electronic mailing lists for booktalkers are appended.
