About the Author

Vangie Bergum, PhD, is a Professor in the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre and the Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta. Her background in childbirth education and public health nursing brought her to ethical questions in healthcare. She has published in both ethics and mothering from her research approach of hermeneutic phenomenology. Professor Bergum completed her term as director of the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre in 2002. John Dossetor, MD, PhD, is Professor Emeritus with the University of Alberta. Prior to founding the Joint Faculties Bioethics Project at the University of Alberta in 1986, Dr. Dossetor had a long and successful career as a nephrologist and research scientist. His experiences in the early days of kidney transplantation raised his ethical awareness and eventually resulted in further study in ethics. Dr. Dossetor s work in medicine and bioethics was recognized in 1995 when he was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada. He currently lives in Ottawa, Ontario, where he continues to consult nationally and internationally on transplantation and ethics.
