There are many explanations of the causes of the Lebanese conflict, but most focus on external variables. Abul-Husn concentrates instead on the role played by domestic factors in the etiology, dynamism and resolution of Lebanon's internal war. Central to the book's argument is the existence of conflictual tendencies within Lebanese social structure, generating long-term cleavages and disharmony, both social and political. These tendencies, argues the author, are inevitable in pluralist societies; but the Lebanese system did not develop the adaptive mechanisms and strategies necessary to contain destructive responses. Abul-Husn analyses his premises in relation to the conflict theory of Marx, Dahrendorf, Coser and Ibn Khaldun. He also provides an empirical base to demonstrate that pluralist societies are not in fact condemned to continuing conflict - providing that they apply conflict-resolution strategies based on flexible, consociational principles.
