Surveys a wide variety of specialty gardens, ranging from water gardens to herb gardens, includes historical background information, and tours more than ninety public and private gardens

James and Haralambou, collaborators on seven garden books, including Flowering Bulbs (Macmillan, 1991) and The Potpourri Gardener ( LJ 4/1/90), take an international look at specialty gardens in this new work. Twelve types of gardens are presented, including water gardens, wildflowers and grasses, parterre, perennial borders, herb gardens, rhododendron and azalea, and collectors' gardens. Each chapter includes historical information on the garden style or featured plants. Interviews with enthusiastic gardeners coupled with the more than 160 lush photographs are designed to pique the interest of knowledgeable gardeners to pursue a particular garden genre. However, once so inspired, they will have to consult more specific and practical books to make that garden dream a reality. Not essential but an appealing addition to strong gardening collections.
