Wherever we turn, it seems we hear about a return to basics that might be described as the new formalism. Turco has no need to return: he has been there all along. As his latest work attests, a contemporary poet can indeed weave the speech and issues of our rambunctious age into carefully honed lines and steady and comforting rhythms: "It is not far from here to/nowhere. Merely across the furniture." Turco has a knack for turning everyday landscapes into exotic settings for fun, discovery, and adventure. Nothing can be anticipated, nothing taken for granted; yet even as they surprise us, these poems exemplify grace. Included here are new poems as well as works selected from Turco's 11 earlier volumes, works that span more than 30 years. As such, it would seem indispensable for any sizeable poetry collection.
