If you want to get downright buggy, pick up this wonderful collection of insect tales from the "Bug Bowl" guru, Tom Turpin. After you're through, you'll know more about the six-legged kingdom and its occupants than any bookworm that you run across. How does insect suturing work? Which insect did the ancient Egyptians worship as a god? What did Ogden Nash have to say about termites? Which insect produces "Turkey Red" dye? What bug has survived for 300 million years? How does a horse fly manage to fly without its head? Each tale is easily accessible, provides fun and scientific facts, and is self-contained. Juveniles and adults alike will be fascinated with the world of Turpin's bugs. The nicely illustrated collection won't give you ants in your pants, but just might put a flea in your ear.

About the Author:

Dr. Tom Turpin is the creator of Purdue University's "Bug Bowl," a celebration of insect antics that annually draws more than 12,000 visitors who come to munch on bug stir-fry, to take part in cricket-spitting contests, and to cheer on tractor-pulling creepy crawlers at Roach Hill Downs. He is a professor of entomology at Purdue's College of Agriculture.

From Booklist:

Creator of Purdue University's "Bug Bowl," a yearly celebration of insects, entomologist Turpin has amassed a collection of fun stories and cool scientific facts about insects. In short (two to three pages), self-contained chapters, he explores the little known and the well known in the realms of insect behavior, ecology, and life cycles. A section about insects and humans reveals the first surgical "staples"--the decapitated heads of ants or beetles, mandibles clamped on the wound to hold it shut. Ten insect families are represented with individual stories, wherein we learn about most people's favorite insects, the butterflies; about the world's most successful insects, the ants; about pesky flies and their even more pesky relatives, the blood-sucking mosquitoes; and about those survivors from ancient times, the cockroaches. Periodical cicadas were used as food by many Native Americans, ants tend herds of aphid "cows" and drink their honeydew droppings, and grasshoppers (i.e., "locusts") claimed biblical fame as one of the plagues of Egypt. In a chatty and pun-filled narrative, Turpin imparts quite a bit of entomological knowledge and makes learning about insects fun. Nancy Bent
