From Library Journal:

Six cars left Times Square in the winter of 1908 with Paris as their ultimate destination, embarking on a motor race that seized the imagination of the day and proved that automobiles were viable forms of transportation. Cosponsored by The New York Times and the Paris newspaper Le Matin , the race was headline news for six months. Racers faced poor or nonexistent roads, bad weather, mechanical breakdowns, and frequent course or rule changes. In addition to using drivers' journals and accounts, journalist Cole makes extensive use of newspaper reports from New York and cities along the route in this thoroughly documented account of the race. This combination of adventure and social and automotive history will fit in most public library motorsports collections.

From School Library Journal:

YA-- Eighteen men in six cars gathered together in New York on February 12, 1908 to begin a fantastic voyage: a car race from New York to Paris. One car was imaginatively equipped with a mast so that it could sail across Siberia on skis. During the race, cars were pulled by horses, stoned by children, and driven down railroad tracks. The contest took 169 days and, after 20,000 miles, the American team, driving a Thomas Flyer, was the first to arrive in Paris. The movie The Great Race starring Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon is based on this event. This is a funny, lively portrait of colorful characters and zany happenings, and it's an easy way to learn about the optimistic era of pre-World War I. Car enthusiasts will love it. --Pat Royal, Crossland High School, Camp Springs, MD
