To call Washington's Pennsylvania Avenue "America's Main Street" is a gross misnomer; while of undeniable historical significance, this six-lane boulevard connecting the Capitol with the White House has little in common with main streets across America. This quibble aside, Highsmith and Landphair have assembled a compelling collection of illustrations and anecdotes documenting the history of the avenue, from its origins in the 18th century through its recent and rather bland facelift. One cannot help but feel from perusing the book's glorious photographs that Pennsylvania Avenue was a far more animated and distinctive place 100 years ago than it is today. Highly recommended for those interested in Washingtoniana.
