The author of Until the Cows Come Home, a tribute to the simple pleasures and the great beauty of life in the Appalachians, now offers an impressionistic portrait of life on an island in the Chesapeake Bay--an area of equal beauty, where life is linked to the water rather than the land. Full-color photos by the author.

Ages 4-8. A quiet, beautiful photo-essay celebrates the remote islands of Chesapeake Bay from dawn to dusk. The simple captions, both precise and lyrical, are great for reading aloud while showing the full-page color photos. Mills captures the sweep and the fragility of the island environment, from the early morning view of sky and shore to the close-up of a lone heron in the noonday sun. All day long, watermen catch rockfish, harvest oysters, and pull and haul crab pots, "and the sea rushes to the shore on an island in the bay." More than any environmental slogan, this book makes us know that we need to save the lonely places. Hazel RochmanFrom School Library Journal:
Grade 2-4?Attractive, full-color photographs of scenery and people on and around several islands in the Chesapeake Bay quietly introduce youngsters to the simple life of the watermen and their beautiful surroundings. Each full-page photo is accompanied by a simple, descriptive phrase. Oddly though, the text is more pompous than poetic. This will have most appeal to patrons in the region, but the photographs will be enjoyed by anyone who loves the sandy shores of the Atlantic. A title that's best suited to independent reading and daydreaming.?Rosanne Cerny, Queens Borough Public Library, NY
