In an exploration of the cycles of the moon and the cycles of growth in the natural world, Schmid presents a story about a squirrel name Tifi who is dazzled by the beauty of the full moon. When it wanes, she is sure it must be hungry so she buries her secret store of hazelnuts for the moon to help make grow. Though Tifi goes hungry herself, her devoted sacrifice will be greatly rewarded. Full color.

PreSchool-Grade 2?A lovely story about a Eurasian red squirrel that revolves around her first year of growth and her fascination with all things round, including the full moon. When Tifi notices it during her first summer, she is mesmerized by its beauty, and horrified when it starts to wane. Thinking it needs food to survive, she buries a circle of the most perfect hazelnuts she can find. Even during the following winter when she and her brothers are very hungry, Tifi will not touch the Moon's store of nuts. As time goes by, she feels that it has repaid her thoughtfulness, because eventually the ring of nuts grows into a thicket of trees that feed and shelter her and her progeny for ever after. For some reason, Tifi never seems to figure out that her friend the Moon has phases, although the Owl tells her early on. While the story is anthropomorphized, the illustrations of Tifi and her forest habitat are quite realistic. Rendered in colored pencils, the pictures reflect the plant and animal life the squirrels encounter naturally. Pair this with titles such as Eric Carle's Very Hungry Caterpillar (Philomel, 1981) for a program on animal eating habits or on how nature replenishes itself.?Rosanne Cerny, Queens Borough Public Library, NY
