From School Library Journal:

Grade 7-9-- The dysfunctional Espirikos family's situation is outwardly manifested in 13-year-old Adrianna's weight problem, her shy withdrawn manner, and her uncontrollable bouts of nausea. She's the second of three daughters in a materially successful, patriarchal family. Beautiful Philomene, 16, seems to have a perfect life, but Adrianna is concerned about their father's frequent late-night visits to her older sister's bedroom. Papa's strict supervision of the girls' activities creates a family battleground that often erupts into physical violence directed at the meek Adrianna. Her friendship with popular Jenny Harris and her parents provides a wholesome outlet for the independence Adrianna so desperately needs. The Harrises are also instrumental in helping the girls when Philomene confirms the suspicions of her father's incest. A painful court hearing ensues; they all enter therapy and Papa is removed from the home. The Espirikoses have a long way to go, but Adrianna's personal growth and internal fortitude throughout the story remain an encouragement for readers. The book is powerful and well written; characterization and plot development are realistic and complete. The sexual allusions are handled discreetly; the girls emerge from the abusive situations with a hopeful outlook for the future, yet they are not without the emotional pain and sacrifice that naturally exist and thrive in such scenarios. This compares favorably with Hadley Irwin's Abby, My Love (McElderry, 1985). --Celia A. Huffman, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Cleveland
