Taquandra Fu, the weirdest girl in class, decides to try being normal for a change

Review:

Filled with silly, funny rhymes and hilarious illustrations. -- The Children's Bookwatch

Taquandra Fu is weird, or so she says. She rides the soul train to school, says yup when she means nope and along with her one friend, whom she calls "Kid," hangs out with the squid at the aquarium. Thus she is regularly asked, "What's up with you, Taquandra Fu?" and rarely asked to join in reindeer games (kickball that is). She decides then to change her style, and while it helps her become more popular, it alienates her best friend, forcing her to ask, "What good is being popular if I cannot be me?" Using a rhyming text the author keeps the reader hopping through the busy life of Taquandra Fu. The ideas progress rapidly as she makes her way from oddness to normalcy and back again. The child reader certainly can relate to Taquandra Fu's personal quandary. Everyone feels different or left out at some point in their lives. The trouble here is that when coupled with the illustrations, Taquandra Fu doesn't come across as being so unique after all. The full-color pen and ink drawings are so full of wacky characters that Taquandra Fu simply looks like one of the crowd. Even after she has her makeover she looks just the same. Plus her room, with its sports equipment scattered all over the floor and her Olympics and Einstein posters, shows her to be a fairly typical youngster. Overall, despite its best intentions, this book tries too hard to be fun, thereby diffusing any emotional impact which may have been achieved through a better balance of art and text. -- From Independent Publisher

This zany story in rhyme...also has some underlying truths....Should appeal to a child's sense of the absurd. -- School Library Journal

From Publishers Weekly:

The glow-in-the-dark cover is the best feature of this uneven picture book, in which the creators of The Contrary Kid introduces Taquandra Fu, "the weirdest girl in the class" and proud of it. Cibula's rhyming text ("My boots are made of raisins and my hats are all stained glass,/ And when it rains I wear an overcoat of shiny brass") strains to be zany, and the frenetic attempts at quirkiness quickly grow tiresome. When an identity crisis finds the oddball "on a mission to be normal," a strange mix of nonsensical observations (e.g. "I ran for class vice-president and Jen said, 'That's a scream!'/ I don't know what she meant, but it sure hurt my self-esteem") and pop psychology leads her down the inevitable path to self-realization ("What good is being popular if I cannot be me?"). With their crisp black-and-white borders, Strassburg's bright, cartoon-like illustrations have a certain flair, but even their jaunty style can't take the self-conscious edge off this rambling rhyme. Ages 4-up. (Feb.) where readers can write to Taquandra Fu.
