Review

In A Fair Country Jon Robin Baitz returns to his most familiar and strongest territory, a family in a moral quandary in a foreign land. Here we have a career American diplomat writhing to escape his posting to 1980s sub-Saharan Africa. Worse yet is the plight of his wife and two grown boys who must live in a Twilight Zone between black and white, liberal and conservative, American and foreign, in late apartheid-era South Africa. To liberate them, the father cuts a moral corner or two--resulting in a death or two--and the family can never be the same, no matter where they run. Baitz is wise in the ways of how the most familiar people can be the most alien, and vice versa.

From the Publisher

Judith Ivey and David Dukes star. A well-meaning American diplomat in South Africa tries to pacify his unstable wife and anti-apartheid son by being reassigned to The Hague. But peace is hard to come by, and at an elegant New Year's Eve party, a harrowing betrayal is revealed.
